SACHSENHAUSEN, UNO DE LOS LUGARES MAS OSCUROS QUE HE VISITADO

During my trip, I visited places around the world that marked the history of that particular country and the world; it is essential to see them, learn from them and when necessary do our best to ensure they never happen again.
Last week I shared “12 places in Berlin that I will never forget“; Sachsenhausen is one more, if not the main place I would never forget and you should visit.

La semana pasada compartí “12 lugares en Berlín que nunca olvidaré“; Sachsenhausen es uno más, si no el principal lugar que nunca olvidaré y que debes visitar.
Sachsenhausen is in Oranienburg, located less than an hour away from Berlin city center. Access is effortless by train and a short walk.
Sachsenhausen se encuentra en Oranienburg, a menos de una hora del centro de Berlín. El acceso es sencillo en tren y la estación esta a unos pasos del campamento.
Few places can make your heart feel so heavy that it’s hard to breathe; it shows you that we are the most harmful living creature in the world.
Humans thinking they are above another human; ambition, hate, a sense of superiority, and not accepting cultural and religious differences were the roots of the Holocaust, also known as the Shoah.
Pocos lugares pueden hacer que tu corazón se sienta tan pesado que te resulte difícil respirar; te muestra que somos la criatura viviente más dañina del mundo.
Existen humanos que piensan que están por encima de otros humanos; están llenos de ambición, odio, con sentido de superioridad y sin respeto a la ideología y religión de otros, estas fueron las razones del Holocausto, también conocido como la Shoah.
Some of the tortures prisoners experienced:
- Running 40km daily under the influence of high performing drugs while starved and dehydrated.
- Running without stopping carrying heavy weights, and if they stopped, they would get shot.
- Testing brand new shoes of the wrong size for running and walking
Algunas de las torturas que experimentaron los prisioneros:

Sadly, after going around the world, it was disheartening to realize that genocides have happened in many countries; however, the Holocaust had the highest number of deaths.
Over 6 million Jews lost their lives.
Sachsenhausen was the first of many Nazi concentration camps all over Germany, and it served as a training camp for Nazi guards.

Those are the stairs and ramp used to move corpses to the corpses storage in the basement.

These were their bathroom facilities, a small washroom, and toilet area that was not enough for the overcrowded barracks. There was no wall isolation, and the water was ice cold.

Prisoners experienced abuse, suffering, starvation, and some of the most inhumane treatment to ultimately die.

Here are the badges used to identify prisoners; there were single and double triangles.
The colors meant the same for single or double triangles; however, yellow badges/ were double triangles assigned to Jews as they resemble David’s Star (A Jewish symbol).
- Pink Gay, trans, or any sexual orientation they condemned, under the same badge, were pedophiles and zoophiles.
- Purple Jehovah’s witness
- Green Real criminals
- Red Political prisoners

A guide for this tour is essential to learn about every place will visit inside; the entire takes close to 6 hours, and it can be mentally/emotionally draining.

When the camp was operating, over 200,000 people entered the camp, resulting in over 10,000 deaths a month.
In 1945 the camp was forced to evacuate and start a death march towards the north. Many prisoners died as they were too exhausted to endure the long walks. If they fell, they got shot.
The surviving prisoners were set free by tanks of the Soviet army before they reached the coast.

After the tour ended, it was time to head back to the city for a restful evening before departing to my next destination: Hamburg.
