MYKONOS

I spent one week in the US, repacking, reconnecting with family/friends, and making sure I had everything ready for the longest leg of my trip.In December 2015, I saw a great deal for a 10-day Greece trip, which I proposed to a dear friend to join me.

Our plan was a summer getaway for 2016, little did I know that a few days after purchasing the trip, the idea to quit my job to travel long term would be a reality.Because of this trip, I had to limit my time in South America, to return on time to catch the flight, since it was already paid for, it was my one-way ticket to Europe.Our package included the following:

Round-trip airfare from New York

2 nights in a standard room in Athens

Regular ferry from Athens to Mykonos in economy class

3 nights of standard accommodation in Mykonos

Hydrofoil from Mykonos to Santorini in economy class

3 nights in a standard room in Santorini

Regular ferry from Santorini to Athens in economy class

Daily breakfast

All taxes

The trip was US$2,299, which I thought was a pretty decent deal for 8 nights/10 days in their highest season (early July). I was beyond excited to finally go to Greece, just like you… I’ve seen so many pictures of this beautiful country, their gorgeous island, towns painted white with blue roofs, gorgeous turquoise beaches, and dark blue skies.Did you know, Greece has over 6,000 islands total? and over 200 of them are inhabited, crazy right? Most of us know about the three most famous cities: Athens, Mykonos & Santorini. I know of a few more islands I would like to explore (Corfu, Crete, Naxos & Paros, Zakynthos) which I hope I get to visit in the future.

Mykonos is known as a fun island with great nightlife, beautiful beaches, cozy bars, and restaurants combined with an unforgettable atmosphere. There is something about greek islands that inspires you to dress up, the cool vibes and beautiful people, not to mention the fantastic weather that enables you to enjoy it all. As I am from the Caribbean when I think summer, I imagine humidity, sweat, and frizzy hair, but summers in Greece are the opposite, they enjoy a dry heat with refreshing winds, and the ocean water is very cold (a Caribbean’s opinion) but manageable.

On our end, Mykonos was about relaxation, beach, sun, walks, food, and sunsets. Here is what you should do:

Tour of Delos island
Rent a vehicle (which we didn’t, we walked, took public buses and taxis), but for the sake of making the most of your time…rent something!
Take a water taxi and do some beach hoping to some of the most famous beaches on the island*Enjoy the waterfront views from Little Venice and enjoy dinner, a drink, or an ice cream
Walk the lovely narrow pedestrian streets of Chora (which means town), and normally the main town in the island is called Chora with the name of the island) that is why is called Mikonos town
Catch sunset by the Mykonos windmills (Kato Mili)Eat a gyro merída
Eat a souvláki in pita
If you love to party, check out the nightclubs (We didn’t)…This is what the island is known for.
If you love watersports, you can do many (windsurfing, wakeboarding, flyboarding, water skiing, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and kite surfing) In short, whether you choose to visit this island with family, friends, or your partner, you would have a wonderful time! Start planning!

GRECIA- MYKONOS 29 de Junio a 3 de Julio, 2016Pasé una semana en los Estados Unidos, empacando, asegurando dejar todo en orden en mi hogar, conectando con familiares y amigos, antes de partir a lo que sería un año mínimo sin regresar a casa. En diciembre del 2015, vi un paquete especial de vacaciones a Grecia por 10 días, le sugerí a una muy buena amiga para que me acompañara. Nuestro plan fue unas vacaciones de verano para el 2016, pero nunca me hubiera imaginado que luego de comprar dichas vacaciones, la idea de realmente renunciar e irme de viajes por largo tiempo, se concretizaría. Por haber comprado dicho viaje, mi tiempo en América del Sur estuvo limitado a casi tres meses, porque necesitaba regresar y asegurar tomar este vuelo, que ya estaba pago, mi ticket de una vía para Europa. Nuestro paquete de vacaciones incluía lo siguiente: *Vuelos ida/vuelta desde NYC

El paquete costaba US$2,299, lo cual encontré bastante razonable considerando que era viaje de 8 noches y 10 días en la temporada más alta (Principios de julio). La verdad estaba más que emocionada de ir a Grecia, me hacía mucha ilusión y al igual que tú, no paraba de ver esas hermosas fotos de sus islas, donde las ciudades están todas pintadas de blanco y azul marino, rodeadas de hermosas playas de agua turquesa y los cielos más azules que jamas habrás visto. Sabias que Grecia tiene más de 6,000 islas? De las cuales más de 200 son inhabitadas, increíble verdad ? La mayoría de las personas conocen o han oído escuchar de las 3 ciudades más famosas: Atenas, Mykonos & Santorini. Personalmente sé de unas más ( Corfu, Creta, Paros, Naxos, Zakynthos) que espero tener la oportunidad de visitar algún día.

Mykonos es conocido como una isla de diversión por su activa vida nocturna, hermosas playas, bares y restaurantes combinados con un ambiente inolvidable. Las islas griegas tienen algo que te inspira a engalanarte con toque playero chic, las vibras “cool”, la belleza de las personas y no puedo olvidar el detalle más importante, el maravilloso clima que disponen que te ayuda a disfrutarlo más. Como soy caribeña, cuando pienso en verano…imagino humedad, sudar y el cabello como una loca, pero los veranos en Grecia ofrecen lo contrario, ellos disfrutan de un verano seco, con agradables brisas y sus playas de agua bien fría (la opinión de una caribeña) pero totalmente manejables.

Por nuestra parte, nuestro plan en Mykonos era relajación, playas, sol, caminatas, comida y atardeceres. Aquí te sugiero lo que deberías hacer:

Tour de la isla Delos
Alquila algún medio de transporte (Jeep, ATV, Pasolas), nosotras no lo hicimos, caminamos, tomamos taxis, autobuses, pero por el bien de aprovechar tu tiempo al máximo…alquila algo!
Toma un taxi acuático hacia las mejores playas de la isla *Disfruta las vistas del mar desde el vecindario “ Little Venice” pequeña Venecia y disfruta una cena, bebidas o un helado
Piérdete explorando las pequeñas calles peatonales de Chora (que significa pueblo), todas las islas llaman Chora al pueblo principal seguido por el nombre de la isla, en este caso se traduce como el pueblo de Mykonos
Disfruta la puesta del sol desde los Molinos de viento de Mykonos ( Kato Mili)
Comete un Gyros merída
Comete un souvláki con gyro
Si te encantan las fiestas y bailar hasta el amanecer, disfruta de todo lo que la vida nocturna te ofrece (Nosotras no salimos de fiesta), pero es por lo que la isla es reconocida internacionalmente
Si disfrutas de los deportes acuáticos, aquí los tienen todos (kitesurfing, esquí acuático, windsurfing, jet skiing, flyboarding, buceo, etc) En resumen, es una isla que si la visitas en familia, en pareja o con amistades, la pasarás fenomenal…animate!

After landing in Athens and spending a night, we took a ferry to Mykonos. The moment we arrived, you see all the taxis, vans waiting to pick up everyone from the port.

Luego de aterrizar en Atenas y pasar la noche, a primera hora del siguiente día tomamos el ferry camino a Mykonos. Desde el momento que llegas al puerto, veras que estará lleno de taxis, autobuses públicos y transportes privados.

From the port, we caught public transportation to Ornos Beach, where our hotel was located, after checking in, we ran out to grab lunch…I know…really? pizza and a burger? but the places around our hotel had mainly international food options, but the view was perfect!

Del puerto tomamos transporte publico hacia Ornos, que es donde se encontraba nuestro hotel, luego de hacer el check in, salimos a comer…se que me dirás…pizza y hamburguesa…en serio?? pero los lugares que encontramos cerca de la playa tenían menú internacional, pero la vista era super chula!

Our server was so sweet that when he learned we just arrived and it was our firt time, he gave us a shot..although we are not drinkers we accepted his courtesy.

Nuestro camarero fue tan dulce, que cuando supo que acabábamos de llegar y era nuestra primera vez en la isla, nos brindo un shot, aunque no somos de mucho tomar, aceptamos su agradable cortesía.

When making our way to Ornos, we noticed a lot of kitesurfing in the area. / Mientras llegábamos a Ornos, notamos que en el área se practica mucho kitesurfing.

When checking in our hotel, they gave us this lovely list with basic greek to practice, isn’t it awesome??
Let me just add that the greek language/accent is just beautiful! they have a way of pronouncing words that to me… is just magic!

Making our way to Delos, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to Greek mythology, Apollo was born there.
It is one of the most important mythological and largest archaeological sites in Greece, and the Mediterranean.

De camino a la isla Delos, el cual es patrimonio de la Humanidad por UNESCO. De acuerdo a la mitología griega, Apolo nació allí.
Es uno de los lugares más importantes en la mitología griega y el área arqueológica más extensa en Grecia y el mediterráneo.

It is crazy to think that almost half of all existing greek mosaics from the Hellenistic period come from Delos.
This one represents the god Dionysos as a winged daimon riding a tiger and it’s from the late 2nd century BC…

Es una locura pensar que casi la mitad de todos los mosaicos griegos existentes del período helenístico provienen de Delos. Este representa al dios Dioniso como un demonio con alas montado sobre un tigre y es de finales del siglo II a.C.

A sculpture of the goddess Artemis, who according to Greek mythology was also born in Delos (Apolo’s sister), also known as the goddess of wild animals, vegetation, and childbirth.

The original marble lions are known as the terrace of the lions that used to stand outside but were taken inside to protect them from further erosion. The terrace was erected and dedicated to Apollo by the people of Naxos just before 600 BCE and it consisted of a row of nine to twelve marble carved lions that faced eastward towards the Sacred Lake of Delos. The lions, with their mouths open, as if roaring or snarling, were both meant to guard the sanctuaries and to inspire a feeling of divine fear among the worshippers.

Los leones de mármol originales se conocen como la terraza de los leones que solían estar afuera pero fueron llevados adentro para protegerlos de una mayor erosión.La terraza fue erigida y dedicada a Apolo por la gente de Naxos justo antes del 600 a. A friend suggested we have our first dinner on the island at Blue Myth Restaurant, not only to enjoy a meal but also experience the culture, as they had greek music and dancing. It was fun to be part of the “glendi”, which means party/celebration.

Un amigo sugirió que tuviéramos nuestra primera cena en la isla en el restaurante Blue Myth, no solo para disfrutar de una comida sino también para experimentar la cultura, ya que tenían música y bailes griegos. Fue divertido ser parte del “glendi”, que significa fiesta / celebración.

Years later I realized I barely took pictures of their wonderful narrow streets…It was the beginning of my journey but luckily I improved and took way more pictures of other cities.

Años después me di cuenta de que apenas tomaba fotos de sus maravillosas calles estrechas … Era el comienzo de mi viaje pero afortunadamente mejoré y tomé muchas más fotos de otras ciudades.

Ornos beach was a few steps away from my hotel and I headed there after breakfast to catch a water taxi to Super Paradise, it was a friend’s suggestion to spend the day there, luckily along the way I was able to briefly see other beaches.
A roundtrip ticket costs 10 euros.

La playa de Ornos estaba a unos pasos de mi hotel y me dirigí allí después del desayuno para tomar un taxi acuático hasta Super Paradise, fue sugerencia de un amigo pasar el día allí, por suerte en el camino pude ver brevemente otras playas.
Un ticket de viaje de ida/vuelta costaba 10 euros.

Mykonos has many beaches and they have them classified according to their attendees.
This one is Platy Gialos and is supposed to be family oriented and for water sports. Enjoying the taxi ride…you see that cute little hat…well.. yeap…I lost it…it flew off, what I was sad about was the fact the boat driver saw it happening and kept going, I would have like to get it but was thinking of the fact that would be in the ocean as garbage.

Este es Platy Gialos y supuestamente es una buena opción para familias y para deportes acuáticos. Disfrutando el viaje en taxi … ves ese lindo sombrero … bueno … sí … lo perdí … se fue volando, lo que me entristeció fue el hecho de que el conductor del bote lo vio y siguió adelante , me hubiera gustado conseguirlo pero estaba pensando en el hecho de que estaría en el océano como basura.

Super Paradise beach is great for partying and water sports. I spent my day at Super Paradise beach. Renting a beach chair is expensive…but necessary.

Returning to Ornos beach, I wanted to take a picture in the afternoon and I asked this lovely woman, we ended up chatting for maybe 10 minutes or so, she is from Australia and was traveling with her family…this one of my favorite things when I am alone…the people I get to talk to along the way…try to remember her if you follow along the way…as you will see her again…

Al regresar a la playa de Ornos, quería tomar una foto por la tarde y le pregunté a esta hermosa mujer, terminamos charlando unos 10 minutos más o menos, ella es de Australia y viajaba con su familia … esto es lo que más me encanta de cuando estoy sola … las personas con las que converso en el camino … intenta recordarla si sigues mi trayectoria … porque la verás de nuevo…

Food brings inexplicable joy to my soul.
The rest of the time we enjoyed what you would call “fast food” which I think is an insult to their delicious food, comparing to what we call fast food in USA. Their food is fresh, but they do serve it fast.
Here I was having a gyros merída, merída means portion.
It was pork meat, onions, green, french fries, and tzatziki sauce.

¡Comida brinda una felicidad inexplicable a mi alma!
El resto del tiempo disfrutamos de lo que llamarían “comida rápida”, que creo que es un insulto a su deliciosa comida, en comparación con lo que llamamos comida rápida en Estados Unidos. Su comida es fresca, pero la sirven rápido.
Aquí me disponía a disfrutar de un gyros merída, merída significa porción. Era carne de cerdo, pan pita, cebolla, papas fritas y salsa tzatziki.
