After a 2h30 min ferry ride, we arrived in Santorini. I am sure you have heard of this island, it is the most photographed island out of all the Greek Islands and yes, it is known as a great destination for honeymooners, romance, dramatic sunsets, wineries, and picture-perfect views. it is insane to think that the island suffered a major volcanic eruption many years ago, dividing the island into 5 islands (Santorini, Therasia, Aspronisi, Palaia Kammeni, and new Kammeni) but the coolest part is that the crater/caldera of the Volcano is submerged in water…the entire bay of Santorini is an active volcano. I have to say, we were quite busy there, there was so much to do and see. Santorini is a bit much more expensive thank Mykonos, but again is one of those destinations you must visit at least once, so it was worth it. Después de un viaje en ferry de 2 h 30 min, llegamos a Santorini. Estoy segura de que has oído hablar de esta isla, es la isla más fotografiada de todas las islas griegas y sí, es conocida como un gran destino para lunas de miel, romance, puestas de sol espectaculares, degustaciones de vino y fotos con vistas maravillosas. Es increíble pensar que la isla sufrió una gran erupción volcánica hace miles de años, dividiéndola en 5 (Santorini, Therasia, Aspronisi, Palaia Kammeni y nueva Kammeni) pero la parte más sorprendente es que el cráter/caldera del volcán está sumergido en el mar… toda la bahía de Santorini es un volcán activo. Debo decir que estuvimos bastante ocupadas allí, había mucho que hacer y ver. Santorini es un poco más costoso que Mykonos, pero es uno de esos destinos que debes visitar al menos uno, así que valió la pena. Esto es lo que deberías hacer:

Here we just arrived in Santorini, the port is packed with car rental companies, private vans, and taxis. Look at the cliffs, you see the lines…those are the roads to make your way to the city.
Aquí acabamos de llegar a Santorini, el puerto está repleto de empresas de alquiler de coches, furgonetas privadas y taxis. Mira los acantilados, ves las líneas … esa es la carretera para llegar a la ciudad.

On the day we arrived, we took a long nap, got ready to explore Fira, and grab dinner.
El día que llegamos, dormimos una larga siesta, nos preparamos para explorar Fira y cenar.
A tip on what not to do when arriving in a new city:
Don’t eat at the 1st place you find..hahaha…explore, walk around, check prices, and then choose a place.
This place worked out well, but it was the first restaurant we walked by….we were starving…
Restaurants in a good location, tend to have higher prices than other restaurants a few blocks away and it doesn’t necessarily mean they serve higher quality food.
Un consejo sobre qué no hacer al llegar a una nueva ciudad: No comas en el primer restaurante que encuentres … jajaja … explora, camina, consulta precios y luego elige un lugar.
Este lugar funcionó bien, pero fue el primer restaurante por el que pasamos … estábamos hambrientas …
Los restaurantes en una buena ubicación tienden a tener precios más altos que otros restaurantes a pocas cuadras de distancia y eso no significa necesariamente que sirvan comida de mayor calidad.
I pretty much can live out of eating gyros! They are very affordable and delicious!
Podría vivir comiendo Gyros..son ricos y super económicos…fue lo que más comí!

We arrived at Akrotiri archeological Site.
Here are the ruins of the village that was destroyed by volcanic ash thousands of years ago, luckily there were no bodies found or at least yet, as the inhabitants got warnings (seismic tremors) and evacuated the area before it happened.
What makes this place so interesting is that the volcanic ash preserved everything so well that it’s an archeologist’s dream; to have a clear look into people’s lives from over 4,000 years ago.
Llegamos al sitio arqueológico de Akrotiri.
Aquí están las ruinas del poblado que fue destruido por cenizas volcánicas hace miles de años, por suerte no se encontraron cuerpos o al menos todavía, ya que los habitantes recibieron alertas (temblores sísmicos) y evacuaron la zona antes de que sucediera.
Lo que hace que este lugar sea tan interesante es que la ceniza volcánica lo conservó todo tan bien que es el sueño de un arqueólogo; para tener una visión clara de la vida de las personas de hace más de 4.000 años.
Arriving to Perissa (Black sand beach) we drove by The church of Panagia Katefiani. You see that tiny white square up the left side of the mountain?
That is a tiny church 200 ft upon the slopes of Mesa Vouno Mountain, it was used as a refuge during times of war or pirate attacks.
I would have loved to hike up, but we only drove by.
Al llegar a Perissa (Playa de arena negra) pasamos por la iglesia de Panagia Katefiani. ¿Ves ese pequeño cuadrado blanco a la izquierda de la montaña?
Esa es una pequeña iglesia a 200 pies de altura en las laderas de la montaña Mesa Vouno, fue utilizada como refugio durante tiempos de guerra o ataques piratas.

We had lunch here and although it was delicious…you can imagine this felt like a snack for me..hahaha

Santorini produces a lot of wine and it’s thanks to Venetian influence from many years ago.
Can you believe there are 18 wineries in Santorini? Considering the size of the island, it is the place with the most wineries in the world. They have a very unique technique known as bush-training called koulara, they use a basket that allows grapes to grow low and be protected from the strong winds and the heat.

We then made our way to Santo Wines Winery, for a tasting with the most amazing views of the caldera

For the last stop of the day, we headed to Oia for sunset and explore the little gift shops in the area
Para la última parada del día, nos dirigimos a Oia para ver la puesta del sol y explorar las pequeñas tiendas de regalos de la zona.
The main reason everyone goes to Oia is to see the sunset. It is truly beautiful and magical.
As you can imagine hundreds of people come here daily to see it. People arrive early in hopes to find a good spot as it can get very crowded.
This part of the island is considered the most romantic, after sunset it gets pretty quiet.
La principal razón por la que todo el mundo va a Oia es para ver la puesta de sol. Es verdaderamente hermoso y mágico.
Como puedes imaginar, cientos de personas vienen aquí a diario para verlo. La gente llega temprano con la esperanza de encontrar un buen lugar, ya que siempre es muy concurrido.
Esta parte de la isla es considerada la más romántica y después del atardecer se vuelve bastante tranquila.
After we walked around and checked different spots, randomly we walked into a Dominican guy and we ended up enjoying sunset away from everyone at the end of the buildings of the area, it was nice and peaceful.
Después de caminar y revisar diferentes lugares, al azar nos encontramos con un chico dominicano y terminamos disfrutando del atardecer lejos de todos al final de los edificios del área, fue agradable y tranquilo.
After sunset, you will be amazed at the number of people leaving Oia at the same time, from bus tours, families, couples…everyone…and it becomes a very quiet town.
Después del atardecer, te sorprenderá la cantidad de personas que salen de Oia al mismo tiempo, desde tours en autobús, familias, parejas … todos … y se convierte en una ciudad muy tranquila.
