During our stay on the island, the weather was fantastic and not as windy as it can be. On our last full day, we did the tour called Volcanic Islands cruise, where we visited: *Santorini Volcano *Nea Kaméni *Palea Kaméni *Thirassiá This tour included transportation (Bus/boat) and a tour guide; meals, entrance, drinks, and tips are additional. I always prefer to take at least one tour per city, because learning the true essence and history of a country/city is extremely important to me. Imagine walking by a building or a monument without knowing it shaped that country’s history or missing out on those fun facts that only guides can share with you…I would be upset!…especially when it may be the only time I visit.
There are so many wonderful countries in this world and I plan to visit new ones every chance I get. After the tour, we went back to our hotel to relax and get ready for a nice dinner in Oia and for us…it was our most memorable meal.
The next morning, we caught our ferry back to Athens, my friend would leave back to the Dominican Republic and I stayed for a few days.
Ohhh, you will see what we experienced on our 1st day in Athens…weather-wise it was a 1st for me.Santorini is an island you can explore on your own by renting a vehicle or joining tours that run pretty much daily during the summer. I am certain this island is part of your bucket list…and if it’s not…add it! you won’t regret it!
Durante nuestra estancia en la isla, el clima fue fantástico y no tan ventoso como puede ser. En nuestro último día completo, hicimos el tour llamado crucero Islas Volcánicas, donde visitamos:
*Volcán Santorini *Nea Kaméni *Palea Kaméni *Thirassiá Este tour incluye transporte (autobús/bote) y un guía turístico; Las comidas, entradas, bebidas y propinas son adicionales. Siempre prefiero hacer por lo menos un tour por ciudad, porque aprender la verdadera esencia y la historia de un país/ciudad es extremadamente importante para mí. Imagínate caminar cerca de un edificio o un monumento sin saber que forma parte de la historia de ese país o pequeños detalles que solo un guía te puede brindar … ¡Me disgustaría! … especialmente cuando puede que sea la única vez que visite esa ciudad. Hay tantos países maravillosos en este mundo y planeo visitar nuevos cada vez que pueda.
Después del recorrido, fuimos a nuestro hotel para relajarnos y prepararnos para una buena cena en Oia, que para nosotras fue la más deliciosa.
A la mañana siguiente, tomamos nuestro ferry de regreso a Atenas, mi amiga regresaba a República Dominicana y yo me quedaba unos días.
Ohhh, verás lo que experimentamos en nuestro primer día en Atenas…en lo que respecta al clima, fue una nueva experiencia para mí. Santorini es una isla que puedes explorar por tu cuenta alquilando un vehículo o participando en algún tour de los que se realizan a diario durante el verano.Estoy segura de que esta isla esta en tu listas de futuros viajes!! y si no está..agrégala! no te arrepentirás.
After we were picked up at our hotel, we made our way to the port to catch our boat.
The view from the boat is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the caldera…the landscape is amazing!
Después de que nos recogieran en nuestro hotel, nos dirigimos al puerto para tomar nuestro bote.
La vista desde el mar es una maravillosa oportunidad para apreciar la belleza de la caldera … ¡el paisaje es increíble!
Look how clear the water is, here we are arriving at Nea Kaméni.
It is an island made out of lava that appeared many years ago after multiple eruptions of the volcano. From Thíra, the main island, you can see it from anywhere.
The number of tours running was impressive but the island is so big that it was ok and it did not feel crowded.
Mira lo clara que está el agua, aquí llegábamos a Nea Kaméni.
Es una isla hecha de lava que apareció hace muchos años después de múltiples erupciones del volcán. Desde Thíra, la isla principal, puedes verla desde cualquier lugar.
La cantidad de tours que llegaban era impresionante, pero la isla es tan grande que no se sentía abrumador.
For this tour, you better wear comfortable shoes as it is a bit of a hike…nothing very challenging but I could tell people didn’t expect the walk and the sun…so sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and a bottle of water are a must.
Para este recorrido, es mejor que uses zapatos cómodos, ya que es una caminata … nada muy desafiante, pero noté que algunas personas no se esperaban la caminata y el sol … así que protector solar, zapatos cómodos y una botella de agua son imprescindibles.

…And the walk continues to reach the top and look down at the crater, you also have a chance to walk around it.
… Y la caminata continúa hasta llegar a la cima y mirar hacia el cráter, también tienes la oportunidad de caminar alrededor de él.
Our next stop was at Palea Kaméni (old burnt island), we jumped in the water and swam to the hot springs that connect to the ocean…volcanic activity underground maintains the springs’ temperature between 86ºF and 95ºF
Nuestra siguiente parada fue en Palea Kaméni (antigua isla quemada) donde algunos saltamos al agua y nadamos hasta las aguas termales que conectan con el océano … la actividad volcánica subterránea mantiene la temperatura de los manantiales entre 30 ° C y 35 ° C.
Making our way back to the boat..and yeap…I cheated by using a flotation device…hahaha
I can swim but I use/waste way more energy than what it’s needed.
Volviendo al barco … y sí … hice trampa! usando un dispositivo de flotación … jajaja

We then made our way to Thirassiá, which is one more island part of Santorini.
Santorini used to be called “Strongilì”, which means the round one, when it used to have a circle shape but once the eruptions happened, the island turned into 5 islands, 2 of which appeared 2,000 and less than 500 years later (Paela Kaméni & Nea Kaméni). Those 2 islands as well as Asproníssi are uninhabited islands.

Santorini solía llamarse “Strongilì”, que significa redonda, cuando solía tener forma de círculo, pero una vez ocurrieron las erupciones, la isla se convirtió en 5 islas, 2 de las cuales aparecieron 2000 y menos de 500 años después (Paela Kaméni Y Nea Kaméni). We had free time to enjoy lunch and go for a swim. The water looked amazing and the food was delicious. I ordered swordfish..but missed to take a picture before devouring it..hahaha…I took a picture of the plate with the bones…but is not something worth sharing.
Tuvimos tiempo libre para disfrutar del almuerzo y nadar. El agua se veía increíble y la comida deliciosa. Ordene pez espada que me encanta, pero tenía tanta hambre que me acordé cuando acabé…le tomé una foto al plato con los huesos que quedaron…pero no es algo para compartir.

Arriving at the port, tour companies offer this option of riding a donkey all the way up to Fíra …if you do a close up in the middle of the picture…you will see a little road and a lot of people on donkeys making their way up…
Al llegar al puerto, las compañías de turismo ofrecen esta opción de montar un burro hasta Fíra… si haces un acercamiento a la imagen en el medio … verás un pequeño camino y mucha gente en burros subiendo …
Back at our hotel, we got ready for a nice relaxing evening on our last night on this gorgeous island.
De regreso a nuestro hotel, nos preparamos para una agradable velada en nuestra última noche en esta hermosa isla.
We arrived at Oia for dinner and it was interesting to see that once sunset happens, everyone leaves and Oia becomes very quiet and peaceful.
Llegamos a Oia para cenar y fue interesante ver que una vez que se pone el sol, todos se van y Oia se vuelve una ciudad muy tranquila y pacífica.
Ok…so my friend and I ended up ordering the same dish…keep in mind this happened in July 2016 so not sure if they still serve it or if they will have the same chef…but OMG we loved it!! It was so delicious, disclaimer I have a thing for caramelized onions…

Getting ready to board the ferry….Check out my bad call on this backpack… in South America I carried an awesome backpack but at 1st it was hard, I was carrying a lot of stuff and I was not used to the weight, I was carrying an 80L 
While in the US, I checked for another backpack and learned of a backpack with the option to become a carry on which I thought was perfection… well… the backpack set up and the belt was not comfortable at all…You will see later on what I ended up doing…results: unnecessary overspending…
Tip: Make sure you do your research and select a backpack/luggage that fits your needs and perhaps the most recommended size for long or short term travel…
Preparándonos para abordar el ferry …Mira mi mala decisión con esta mochila … En Sudamérica llevaba una mochila muy buena pero al principio fue dificil y no estaba acostumbrado al peso, cargaba 80L
Mientras estuve en los EE. UU. Busqué otra mochila online y me enteré de una mochila con la opción de convertirse en un equipaje de mano que pensé que seria la perfección … Bueno … De mochila no era para nada cómoda ni el cinturón… Verás más adelante lo que terminé haciendo … Resultado: gasto innecesario…
Consejo: asegúrate de investigar y seleccionar una mochila o maleta que se adapte a tus necesidades y quizás el tamaño más recomendado para viajes de larga o corta duración.
