For many travelers that booked a package to Greece, Athens will always be part of the itinerary.
Before getting there, all I heard people say is that there is not much to do…the only thing people care about is the Parthenon. If they see the Parthenon, they consider the visit to Athens complete, however, there is much more to do but it will all depend on your interests, you might want to only enjoy Greece’s beautiful islands, but if you have an interest in history and culture, you will be amazed.
Here are some interesting facts about Athens:
-It got its name after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare
-It is Europe’s oldest capital
-Democracy was born in Athens
-Athens has experienced all types of governments (Tyranny, monarchy, oligarchy, and democracy)
-Athens was not always the capital of Greece; the first capital was called Nafplio
-You can enjoy a beach day in Athens
Our itinerary included 2 nights, our first and last night, but I decided to stay a few extra nights, to explore, rest, and figure out my next steps towards my next destination: Italy.
At first, booking as I go was nerve-racking, but I love the freedom it gave me and the unexpected adventures I was able to embark on.
During my time in Athens, this is what I did and you should too if you have enough time:
*Go to Lycabettus Mountain for sunset and enjoy city views from day to night
*Walk around Syntagma Square
*Spend a day exploring Acropolis to see some of the main sites:
1.The Parthenon
2.The Odeon of Herodes Atticus
3.Theatre of Dionysus
4.Old Temple of Athena
*Walk towards Arch of Hadrian also known as Hadrian’s Gate
Antes de ir, todo lo que escuché a la gente decir es que no hay mucho que hacer… lo único que les importa ver es el Partenón. Si ven el Partenón, consideran que la visita a Atenas está completa, sin embargo, hay mucho más que hacer, pero todo dependerá de tus intereses, es posible que solo desees disfrutar de las hermosas islas de Grecia, pero si tiene interés en la historia y la cultura, te sorprenderás.
Para muchos viajeros que compran un paquete a Grecia, Atenas siempre será parte del itinerario.
Aquí te comparto algunos datos interesantes sobre Atenas:
-Su nombre se debe a Atenea, la diosa de la sabiduría y la guerra.
-Es la capital más antigua de Europa
-La democracia nació en Atenas
-Atenas ha experimentado todo tipo de gobiernos (tiranía, monarquía, oligarquía y democracia)
-Atenas no siempre fue la capital de Grecia, la primera capital se llamó Nafplio
-Puedes disfrutar de un día de playa en Atenas
Nuestro itinerario incluía 2 noches, la primera y la última, pero decidí quedarme unas cuantas noches más para explorar, descansar y descubrir mis próximos pasos hacia mi próximo destino: Italia.
Al principio, reservar sobre la marcha me ponía los nervios de punta, pero me encanta la libertad que me brindaba y las aventuras inesperadas en las que pude embarcarme.
Durante mi estadía en Atenas, esto fue lo que hice y te sugiero lo mismo si tienes tiempo…
* Ve a la montaña Lycabettus para ver el atardecer y disfruta de las vistas de la ciudad del día a la noche
* Camina por la Plaza Syntagma
* Pasa un día explorando la Acrópolis para ver algunos de los sitios principales:
1.El Partenón
2.El Odeón de Herodes Ático
3.Teatro de Dionisio
4.Antiguo templo de Atenea
* Camina hacia el Arco de Adriano conocido como Puerta de Adriano

The day we arrived in Greece, we spent the 1st night in Athens and as hard as we tried, we didn’t have enough time to make it inside the acropolis, but if you remember what I mentioned in last week’s post, I experienced a first… As you can see in this picture, it was cloudy, but I never expected what happened next…
That night we only had a chance to walk around and grab dinner before heading back to the hotel.
El día que llegamos a Grecia, pasamos la primera noche en Atenas y, por mucho que lo intentamos, no tuvimos tiempo suficiente para llegar a la acrópolis, pero si recuerdas lo que mencioné en la publicación de la semana pasada, experimenté un primero … Como pueden ver en esta imagen, estaba nublado, pero nunca esperé lo que pasó después …
Esa noche solo tuvimos la oportunidad de caminar y cenar antes de regresar al hotel.
It started pouring rain…but as if a hurricane was in the area…but that is not new to me…but the hailstorm that followed was awesome!! let’s just say I was not happy for my hair..but super excited to see a hailstorm, just glad we found an old telephone booth where we sheltered until everything passed. I’ll post the video so you can see it!!
Comenzó a llover a cántaros …como si hubiera un huracán en la zona … pero eso no es nuevo para mí … ¡¡pero la granizada que siguió fue increíble !! digamos que no estaba contento por mi cabello … pero super emocionada de ver una granizada, por cuerte encontramos una vieja cabina telefónica donde nos refugiamos hasta que pasó todo. When we returned from the islands, we had the chance to explore Athens and the first thing we did was to go to Mount Lycabettus, we took the funicular to the top, enjoy the views and a delicious dinner.
Although it’s a really dark picture in the middle you can see Acropolis lighted up.
Cuando regresamos de las islas, tuvimos la oportunidad de explorar Atenas y lo primero que hicimos fue ir al Monte Lycabettus, tomamos el funicular hasta la cima, disfrutamos de las vistas y una deliciosa cena.
Aunque es una imagen muy oscura en el medio, puedes ver la Acrópolis iluminada.

Although I would normally say not to eat at a major attraction, we did…hahaha..we were starving, and actually, the food was delicious.. thank God! We ate at K. Grill.
I had pork with fries and the meat was so tender and juice…I was extremely pleased! My friend had the Moussaka, which is a dish with eggplant, potatoes, and ground meat.
Aunque normalmente diría que no comas en una atracción importante, lo hicimos … jajaja … nos moríamos de hambre y de hecho, la comida estaba deliciosa … ¡Gracias a Dios!El restaurante se llama K. Grill
Comí cerdo con papas fritas y la carne estaba tierna y jugosa … ¡Quedé extremadamente satisfecha! Mi amiga ordenó el Moussaka, que es un plato a base de berenjenas, patatas y carne molida.
On the last morning of the itinerary we booked, my friend had to depart early for the airport to return to the Dominican Republic.
I got ready for breakfast and planned to eat as much as I could..just how I like it ..love breakfast buffets.
I started talking to a couple close to me and they invited me to join their table, we then realized we had booked the same package! They were enjoying a babymoon as they were expecting their first child.
Crazy to think, their little boy is already 4 and they already have a beautiful 6-month-old baby girl.
En la última mañana del itinerario, mi amiga tuvo que partir temprano hacia el aeropuerto para regresar a República Dominicana.
Yo por mi parte, me preparé para disfrutar el desayuno y comer todo lo que pudiera … tal como me gusta … me encantan los bufés de desayuno.
Comencé a hablar con una pareja cercana a mí y me invitaron a unirme a su mesa, ¡luego nos dimos cuenta de que habíamos reservado el mismo paquete! Estaban disfrutando de su babymoon, ya que a pocos meses recibirian a su primer hijo.
Es una locura pensar que su pequeño ya tiene 4 años y ellos ya tienen una hermosa niña de 6 meses.
I left my bags in storage to head out and explore the city, and leave the moving to the hotels for the end of the day.
On my agenda, I planned to visit someone I met over cold calling on my job and I had the chance to work with him multiple times, it was a rare opportunity to actually meet in person.
On my way to his office, I walked by the National Library of Athens, which is listed as one of the neoclassical buildings in the center of Athens.
Dejé mis maletas guardadas para salir y explorar la ciudad, y dejar la mudanza de hostal para el final del día.
En mi agenda, planeaba visitar a alguien que conocí por mi trabajo y tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con él varias veces, era una rara oportunidad de saludarlo en persona.
De camino a su oficina, pasé por la Biblioteca Nacional de Atenas, que figura como uno de los edificios neoclásicos del centro de Atenas.
Strolling around Syntagma Square, which is the central square of Athens, and at the far end, you can see the 19th Century Old Royal Palace, where the Greek parliament is located.
Paseando por la Plaza Syntagma, que es la plaza central de Atenas, en el fondo podrás ver el Antiguo Palacio Real del siglo XIX, donde se encuentra el parlamento griego.
I worked in the Hospitality industry over 15 years and the best part about it is all the people I get to meet/speak to from around the world.
We talked many times over the phone so it was exciting to meet! Something funny that happened is that when I told him the location of the hostel I booked, he was mortified..hahaha..he said: Oh you are not staying there! you will stay with me and my family! haha, So I ended up staying a few nights with his wonderful family.
He trabajado en la industria hotelera durante 15 años y la mejor parte es toda la gente que conozco en persona o por teléfono de todas partes del mundo.
Hablamos muchas veces por teléfono, ¡así que fue emocionante conocernos! Algo curioso que pasó es que cuando le dije la ubicación del hostal que había reservado, se sintió mortificado … jajaja … me dijo: ¡Oh, no te vas a quedar allí! te quedarás conmigo y mi familia! jaja Así que terminé quedándome un par de noches con su maravillosa familia.
After leaving my friend’s office I went to walk around Plaka.
Plaka is an old historic neighborhood pretty much under the Acropolis. There you will find many restaurants, bars, and shops. There are pedestrian streets that makes walking around that much more enjoyable.
Después de salir de la oficina de mi amigo fui a caminar por Plaka.
Plaka es un antiguo barrio histórico prácticamente bajo la Acrópolis. Allí encontrarás muchos restaurantes, bares y tiendas. Hay calles peatonales que hacen que pasear sea mucho más agradable.
My favorite thing to do…walk around a new place..people watching..just taking it all in.
Lo que más me gusta hacer … caminar por un lugar nuevo … observar a la gente … simplemente asimilarlo todo.
Here you can see to the right of the picture a little bit of the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea, it’s a greek orthodox church and one of the oldest churches in Athens.
Aquí puedes ver a la derecha de la imagen un poco de la Iglesia de Panagia Kapnikarea, es una iglesia ortodoxa griega y una de las iglesias más antiguas de Atenas.
At the far end, you can see the Acropolis peaking up, and underneath, what looks like a cylinder… its the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates, which is known as the first use of the Corinthian order on the exterior of a building.
Corinthian order was the last order developed of the three principal classical orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture.
Yes, those details would only make sense for someone that loves architecture, however, it was interesting to learn the differences between Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian.
En fondo hacia arriba, podrás ver la Acrópolis , y debajo, lo que parece un cilindro … es el Monumento Choragic de Lisícrates, que se conoce como el primer uso del orden corintio en el exterior de un edificio.
El orden corintio fue el último orden desarrollado de los tres principales órdenes clásicos de la arquitectura antigua griega y romana.
Lo sé… esos detalles que solo tendrían importancia para alguien que ama la arquitectura, sin embargo, fue interesante conocer las diferencias entre jónico, dórico y corintio.
While walking around I kept running into little trains like this one, they happen to function like a hop on hop off tour, if you ride it without getting off it takes about 40 minutes and they will take you to the main point of interest.
They are called Athens Happy Train and cost under 5 Euros for the day, it would be convenient for families traveling with children and elders.
Mientras caminaba, me encontré con pequeños trenes como este; funcionan como transporte que puedes subirte y bajarte todas las veces que quieras en un día, el paseo sin bajarte toma unos 40 minutos y te muestran los puntos de intéres del aréa.
Se llaman Athens Happy Train y cuestan menos de 5 euros por día, sería conveniente para familias que viajan con niños y/o personas mayores.
This is the Arch of Hadrian also known as Hadrian’s Gate, which is a monumental gateway in honor of the arrival of Hadrian, a Roman emperor who supported the city.
Este es el Arco de Adriano, también conocido como Puerta de Adriano, es un arco monumental en honor a la llegada de Adriano, un emperador romano que apoyó la ciudad.
Walking around Athens, I kept seeing this, and I didn’t understand what was that about.
Almost every giftshop had it available and it was a bottle opener.
I learned they are phallus in honor of Dionysus, the god of fertility and life.
Caminando por Atenas, seguía viendo esto y no entendía de qué se trataba.
Casi todas las tiendas de regalos lo tenían disponible y era un abrebotellas.

There are two entrances to Acropolis and without knowing I entered through the side entrance, not sure what happened but they almost didn’t allow me to go to the area where I can see the Parthenon. I had a combination ticket that allows me to visit multiple sites.
My first site was the theatre of Dionysus.
Hay dos entradas a la Acrópolis y sin saberlo entré por la entrada lateral, no estoy seguro de lo que pasó pero casi no me dejan ir a la zona donde puedo ver el Partenón. Tenía un boleto combinado que me permitía visitar varios sitios.

Making my way up to Acropolis, you can see Mount Lycabettus.

This is the Odeon of Herodes Atticus or Herodeon, its a stone roman theater and still to this day is used as a venue for some concerts. It is one of the oldest and finest open-air theaters in the world.
Este es el Odeón de Herodes Ático o Herodeón, es un teatro romano de piedra y hasta el día de hoy se utiliza como sede de algunos conciertos. Es uno de los mejores y más antiguos teatros al aire libre del mundo.

My favorite part was the caryatids, which are sculpted female figures serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting.

The Parthenon was built to honor the goddess Athena, it was a symbol of power and wealth.
Something that I heard repeatedly throughout my trip was: “you see that part that is missing if you ever go to the British Museum…you will find it there…that is the case of the Parthenon marbles also known as Elgin marbles.
The Elgin marbles are a collection of sculptures part of the Parthenon that was taken away and is on display at the British Museum. The Greek government has requested the return of the pieces, however, the British Museum declines the request.

Everywhere I go I meet a lot of people, many times people are surprised to learn I am traveling alone…seems not many people feel comfortable doing that.

Before or after exploring Acropolis, by the main entrance make sure to go up Aeropagus hill, you get amazing views of the Acropolis and the city.

My dear friend Alex, his lovely wife Artemis, and their youngest daughter Loukia. They welcomed me into their homes as if I was a family member visiting. I spent a couple of nights with them, where I had the chance to really rest and make arrangements for my next destination.

While staying with my friends, they took me to a beautiful beach called Kalos Yalos located in Porto Rafti.
It was relaxing and not crowded, you can tell only locals go there…perfection!
