After spending a few days with my friend and his family, I made arrangements for my next destination and booked a hostel for a couple of nights on my own in Athens. I still remember how concerned my friend was of the location of my hostel, which was Viktoria Square, he requested to drive me there and to his surprise, the hostel and area were not what he imagined, he was very pleased and realized the area had improved. During my travels, I booked all my accommodations using hostelworld, and considering I worked in the hospitality industry I have to say that the most reliable reviews I have ever read are there because people go to the point and discuss what is important: location, cleanliness, security, service, and WIFI…so although my friend was concerned, I wasn’t. During my last days in Athens, I had the chance to relax, take it slow, explore many cultural sites, meet people along the way, eat a lot of delicious food, connect with a dear AFS friend, who I met during my exchange program living in Portugal…that’s the beauty of social media…people that post right away give me a chance to send them a note and try to connect. Here is the continuation of my to-do list:
- *Explore the archeological site of Kerameikos
- *Visit the Acropolis Museum
- *Grab lunch in Monastiraki, and explore Ancient Agora
- *Grab a drink at a Rooftop for a view of the Acropolis
- *Visit the Temple of Olympian Zeus, also known as Olympieion.
- *Do a little souvenir shopping in Plaka
- *Grab dinner in Plaka
- Ahhh! So much to do…so little time! Tell me what you think of both lists?? Have you been to Athens before? After over 3 weeks in Greece, it was time to leave, but I am certain I will visit again…there are over 6,000 islands to explore

Después de pasar unos días en casa de mi amigo y su familia, hice arreglos para mi próximo destino y reservé un hostal por un par de noches más en Atenas, y todavía recuerdo la preocupación de mi amigo por la ubicación del hostal, que estaba cerca de la Plaza Victoria, me pidió llevarme hasta allá y para su sorpresa, el hostal y el área no eran lo que imaginaba, estaba muy contento y se dió cuenta de que el área había mejorado. Durante mis viajes, reservé todos mis alojamientos usando hostelworld y, considerando que he trabajado en la industria hotelera toda mi vida profesional, debo decir que las reseñas más confiables que he leído están ahí porque la gente va al grano y discute lo que es importante: ubicación, limpieza, seguridad, servicio y WIFI … así que aunque mi amigo estaba preocupado, yo no lo estaba. Durante mis últimos días en Atenas, tuve la oportunidad de relajarme, tomar las cosas con calma, explorar muchos sitios culturales, conocer gente en el camino, comer comida deliciosa, conectarme con una querida amiga de AFS, a quien conocí durante mi programa de intercambio cuando viví en Portugal … esa es la belleza de las redes sociales … las personas que publican de inmediato me dan la oportunidad de enviarles una nota e intentar reunirnos. Aquí está la continuación de mi lista de sugerencias para Atenas:
- * Explora el sitio arqueológico de Kerameikos.
- * Visita el Museo de la Acrópolis
- * Almuerza en Monastiraki y visita el Ágora Antiguo

They had American decor and I have to say it was a very cute street food stop. They are open 24/7 and you can build your own burger.

A street food vendor in Plaka selling coconuts and other sweets. Interesting display that I’ve never seen before. In my country (DR), you can buy coconuts too, they keep them in a fridge so that the water is cold, they only open them when you buy them, you get to drink cool fresh coconut water and eat the meat.

Evenings in Monastiraki are very lively! Most restaurants have outdoor seating and it’s a very relaxing and fun atmosphere.

Views of the archeological site Kerameikos, which used to be a potters neighborhood, which later on became a cemetery.
Most potters choose to live there because a river close by would produce clay that they would use for pottery.

My next stop was Athens Ancient Agora and my first site was the Temple of Hephaestus, which is very well preserved. Hephaestus was the patron god of craftmanship, fire, and metal working.

Another opportunity where I get to meet people!… These lovely girls from the US were exploring the same attractions, so we helped each other taking pictures, I even lure them to join me to eat ice cream.

What a surprise when I arrived at the acropolis museum to find it closed, on this particular day they shut down by 4pm.

While walking around Monastiraki I ran into this beautiful light installation, which looks wonderful at night.
It was a project where they invited lamp users to donate lamps that would be installed in this little street that was seen as abandoned.

Always a lovely time with P! We met in Portugal as AFS exchange students in 1999 and we got a chance to live in the same small town with different families. She visited me once in DR and I got a chance to see her in NYC…17 years later and yet it felt like the good old days.

This time I finally made it to the Acropolis Museum! It is beautiful and quite new, a little over 10 years old. The Museum is an archeological museum showcasing items found in the Acropolis.

Ok and as random as this may seem, my favorite dish while in Greece was at this tiny place called O Milos, it doesn’t even have a website and surely is not a place Tourist would consider going to.
As I had a late lunch and an ice cream at dinner time, I did not get hungry until almost 2 am.
It is a small restaurant where they mainly serve dishes from Crete.
I remember thinking…I don’t think I will find something I like here…but there were no other places open that late…
The dish is called gamopílafo, which tends to be served at weddings, the word Gámos means: wedding and piláfi are cooked rice, they put lamb meat over it which is from an old lamb.
I didn’t want to eat rice so I asked if I could have the meat with fries. The meat looked so oily that I was not that excited to eat it but once I took a bite…it was heavenly.. the sauce with the fries gave me so much joy and it was another reminder that 1st impressions can be totally wrong.
Ok, y por más extraño que parezca, mi plato favorito mientras estuve en Grecia fue en este pequeño lugar llamado O Milos, ni siquiera tiene un sitio web y seguramente no es un lugar que turistas considerarían ir.
Como almorcé tarde y tomé un helado a la hora de la cena, no tuve hambre hasta casi las 2 am.
Es un pequeño restaurante donde sirven principalmente platos de Creta.
Recuerdo haber pensado … no creo que encuentre algo que me guste aquí … pero no habían otros lugares abiertos.
El plato se llama gamopílafo, que se suele servir en las bodas, la palabra Gámos significa: boda y piláfi es arroz cocido, le ponen encima carne de cordero de mayor edad.
No quería comer arroz, así que pregunté si podía comer la carne con papas fritas. La carne se veía tan aceitosa que no estaba tan emocionada de comerla, pero una vez que le di un bocado … fue celestial … la salsa con las papas fritas me dio mucha alegría y fue otro recordatorio de que las primeras impresiones pueden estar totalmente equivocadas.
