Italy July 13th-17th, 2016
In the last four years, Positano’s popularity has skyrocketed! At least based on social media findings, when it comes to Italy…it is the destination you will see the most. The Amalfi Coast is a Unesco World Heritage Site; in fact, Italy is the second country in the world to have more than 50 World Heritage Sites. Positano is a beautiful coastline village in the South of Italy, merged in cliffs, so I can tell you right now…if you hate stairs…you might need to rent a scooter or you will at least have the best daily workouts ever! The village has become a top destination for romantic getaways and honeymooners. When you go, you see couples left and right but nothing like finding the only hostel in town and a crowd aligned with your travel style. The hostel was packed with backpackers and many female solo travelers which was nice. I realize now, that as Italy was my first destination in Europe without a “package” like Greece, I was anxious on expenses as this continent is much more expensive than many others and the thought of a year of travel without working was a bit terrifying. I also noticed I barely took pictures of food…but don’t worry that improves along the way.
Hostel Brikette was the priciest hostel I ever paid for in my two years backpacking; however, it was well worth it, keeping in mind the location, the view and service. To put it into perspective, USD$50 a night doesn’t sound bad at all specially when any hotel in the area was starting at USD$250 a night. I meant to stay for 3 nights, however the eurorail pass that was meant to be delivered there…never arrived; I even stayed an extra night waiting for it, but as everything in life…” things happen for a reason” … I contacted them and they never issued the pass, I asked for a refund and it was the best thing that could have happened… that pass was close to $1,000 and I surely spent a bit less using buses and trains once in a while…I had time, however if you are traveling with limited time the pass is a great option as you can prebook and arrange your itinerary ahead of time.
What to do in Positano?? Here is my list of suggestions!
- Wake up early and after a delicious breakfast, enjoy the morning hours at Fornillo beach
- Walk the streets of Positano that would lead you to the beach and check out little stores along the way
- Do not skip a meal…it is Italy…so pasta and pizza galore…gelato too!!
- Take a boat ride to Amalfi and spend the day there
- Take a bus and visit Ravelo
- Spend a morning at Spiaggia Grande, also called Marina Grande Beach, go again later for an afternoon swim
- Take a day trip to Capri
- Visit Pompeii
En los últimos cuatro años, la popularidad de Positano se ha disparado! Al menos según los hallazgos de las redes sociales, cuando se trata de Italia … es el destino que más encontrarás. La Costa Amalfitana ha sido clasificada por la Unesco como Patrimonio de la Humadidad; De hecho, Italia es el segundo país del mundo que tiene más 50 Patrimonios de la Humanidad. Positano es un hermoso pueblo costero en el sur de Italia, fusionado en acantilados, así que puedo decirte ahora mismo … si odias las escaleras … tendrás que alquilar un scooter o mirándolo por el lado bueno…tendrás lo mejores días de entrenamientos de pierna de tu vida. El pueblo se ha convertido en uno de los principales destinos para escapadas románticas y recién casados. Cuando vas, ves parejas de izquierda a derecha, pero nada como encontrar el único albergue de la ciudad y una multitud alineada con tu estilo de viaje. El albergue estaba lleno de mochileros y muchas mujeres que viajaban solas, lo cual fue genial. Mirando hacia atrás, me doy cuenta de que como Italia fue mi primer destino en Europa sin un “paquete” como Grecia (Pagué Grecia muchos meses antes de renunciar), estaba ansiosa por los gastos ya que es un continente mucho más costoso que los otros y la idea de un año de viaje sin trabajar aún era un poco aterrador. También noté que apenas tomé fotos de comida …pero no te preocupes, eso mejora en el camino. El Hostal Brikette fue el más costoso en mis dos años de mochilera; sin embargo, valió la pena, teniendo en cuenta la ubicación, la vista y el servicio. Para ponerlo en perspectiva, $ 50 dólares por noche no suena nada mal, especialmente cuando cualquier hotel en el área estaba a partir de $ 250 dólares por noche. Tenía la intención de quedarme 3 noches, sin embargo, el pase eurorail que debí recibir allí … nunca llegó; Incluso me quedé una noche más esperándolo, pero como todo en la vida…las cosas pasan por algo. Resulta que nunca emitieron el pase, pedí un reembolso y fue lo mejor que pudo haber pasado, ese pase estaba cerca de $ 1,000 dólares y seguramente gasté un poco menos usando autobuses y trenes de vez en cuando … yo contaba con tiempo, sin embargo, si viajas con tiempo limitado, el pase es una gran opción ya que puedes reservar y organizar tu itinerario con anticipación.
¿Qué hacer en Positano? Aquí está mi lista de sugerencias!
- Levántate temprano y después de un delicioso desayuno, disfruta de las horas de la mañana en la playa de Fornillo.
- Camina por las calles de Positano que te llevarán a la playa y visita las pequeñas tiendas que encontraras en el camino
- No te saltes ni una comida … estas en Italia … así que pasta y pizza en abundancia …helado también!
- Toma un paseo en barco hacia Amalfi y pásate el día allí
- Toma un autobús y visita Ravelo
- Pásate una mañana en Spiaggia Grande también conocida como playa de Marina Grande, vuelve y a nadar en el atardecer
- Haz una excursión a Capri
- Visita las ruinas de Pompeya

Making it to Positano from Rome, was a 6 hours adventure, backpacker style.
I caught a train to Naples, then another train to Sorrento. That last train was packed, I was sweating like crazy and had to stand, as it was super crowded. Once in Sorrento, I caught a bus to Positano.
2 observations:
1. Italian bus drivers look like models
2. They are truly talented at driving those buses, if you saw the curves they have to go through and maneuver to let oncoming traffic pass, you literally will feel like your life depends on them…oh and if you get motion sickness…you will get it here, I barely do and I felt a bit nauseous.
Llegar a Positano desde Roma fue una aventura de 6 horas, estilo mochilera.
Tomeé un tren a Nápoles, luego otro tren a Sorrento. Ese último tren estaba lleno, sudaba como una loca y tuve que ir parada, ya que estaba súper lleno. Una vez en Sorrento, tomé un autobús a Positano.
2 observaciones:
1. Los conductores de autobuses italianos parecen modelos
2. Son realmente talentosos conduciendo esos autobuses, si ve las curvas que tienen que atravesar y maniobrar para dejar pasar el tráfico que viene en sentido contrario, literalmente sentirás que tu vida depende de ellos … ah, y si te mareas… lo conseguirás aquí, a mí me dio un poco de náuseas.
After finding my hostel and carrying that horrible bag up a bunch of stairs, I went for a walk on the street that would lead me to Spiaggia Grande. There are many restaurants however I was only craving a crepe with Nutella with vanilla ice cream…and that’s what I had

Waking up after a restful evening was priceless, after such a busy travel day. Can you believe this was the view from my room?? I know!! crazy and beautiful!

Fornillo is the second largest beach in Positano and a much quieter one, it is only 10-minutes away from Spiaggia Grande.
The name Fornillo is attributed to a time where there were a lot of ovens (Fornos) in the area for the production of bread.
you would think this was very early considering it was so empty but it was close to 10am
I love the colorful beach chairs and umbrellas but the coolest thing I have only seen in Italy is that little face umbrella!! perfection!! I love laying under the sun but I do not like to tan my face…so this

El nombre Fornillo se atribuye a una época en la que existían muchos hornos (Fornos) en la zona para la elaboración de pan.

After a 10 minute walk and some steps, you arrive at Spiaggia Grande which is the main beach in Positano. From there you can take boats for private tours or take ferries that can take you to Capri, Amalfi, or Ischia.
Después de una caminata de 10 minutos y algunas escaleras, llegas a Spiaggia Grande, que es la playa principal de Positano. Desde allí puedes alquilar botes para tours privados o tomar ferries que pueden llevarte a Capri, Amalfi o Ischia.

On the left, you see that dome? That is the church of Santa Maria Assunta, it is the main landmark of the village.
Unfortunately in this picture, you can’t tell but it is a gorgeous majolica tiled dome, it’s beautiful colors have secured the dome a spot on almost every postcard you will ever see of the village.

Desafortunadamente en esta imagen, no se nota pero es una hermosa cúpula de azulejos de mayólica, sus hermosos colores le han asegurado a la cúpula un lugar en casi todas las postales que verás del pueblo.
Gorgeous view of Positano from the ocean! The ferry to Amalfi only takes about 25 minutes but the view along the way is magical. If you can’t or don’t want to hire a private boat ride, this is a great alternative to enjoy the views at an affordable price.

Look at that huge cave! It looks scary considering there are buildings right under it. It’s located between Positano and Amalfi.

Beautiful Amalfi, is the main village in the area, the reason why it is called the Amalfi Coast.
Here are two interesting facts about this village:
* Lemons are a trademark of the Amalfi coast and they are nothing like what we are used to, they are huge and every part of the fruit is used in their gastronomy but most importantly on their Limoncello. Limoncello is a lemon liquor that is now famous worldwide and is the second most important liquor in Italy.
* For the coffee lovers, it is said that the name cappuccino came up from the order of Franciscan Minor friars who used to live at the Cappuccini monastery, they were called Cappuccini because they wore a hooded robe, hood means Cappuccio. The Monastery was turned into a hotel and currently is part of the NH hotel group.
La hermosa Amalfi, es el pueblo principal de la zona, por lo que la zona es llamada la Costa de Amalfita.
Aquí hay algunos datos interesantes sobre este pueblo:

As soon as I arrived in Amalfi I decided to take a bus to Ravello. It is a 30-minute bus ride up a hill.
Ravello has been called the city of Music, for its vibrant musical and cultural scene.
This is the Duomo de Ravello.

My next stop was Villa Rufolo, where I walked around the Moorish cloister, quit beautiful!

The gardens in Villa Rufolo are the center stage for the Ravello festival which takes place every year from July to September. When I was there the chairs and everything was set up. It must be amazing to see a performance there with the coast as a backdrop.

When you search images of Ravello online this is the most famous image you will find and it’s also the most common on postcards. This tree is considered the most photographed tree in Italy…it reminds me of the most photographed tree in the US…the Lone Cypress

After exploring Ravello, I returned to Amalfi to check out the town before heading back to Positano.

Duomo di Amalfi or Amalfi Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in the center of the old town, it has gone through many renovations throughout the years and it is also in honor of the apostle Saint Andrews.
The Cathedral stairs were a great spot to relax and do people watching… everywhere I go, I love to sit somewhere a take a mental picture and look at people around me…it’s my favorite thing to do while traveling solo…check out a little photo bombing on the right.

Walking around I stumped into this adorable fountain called De Cape ‘e Ciucci Fountain Presepe, in this picture may not be very clear but it is a very unique nativity representation and also everyday life village workers…a baker, craftsman, a pizzeria…among other representations.
I stood there for a while as the thing that struck me the most was the number of locals that would stop by, take a sip of water and go on their merry way…I thought…if everyone is drinking it should be fine and it was…I drank and filled my water bottle.
Caminando me encontré con esta adorable fuente llamada De Cape ‘e Ciucci Fountain Presepe, en esta imagen puede que no sea muy clara, pero es una representación de la natividad y también de los trabajadores del pueblo de la vida cotidiana … un panadero, artesano, una pizzería. ..entre otras representaciones.
Me quedé allí un rato, ya que lo que más me llamó la atención fue la cantidad de lugareños que pasaban, tomaban un sorbo de agua y seguían su camino alegre … pensé … si todos beben, debe ser potable y lo era … bebí y llené mi botella de agua.
As I was getting ready to leave Amalfi, I kept running into people eating seafood and it made me drool…I ended up asking someone where could I get it and they showed me the way. It was a grab and go place and ohhh the variety of fried seafood was great! I have a weakness for fried food….I choose calamari and shrimp and they wrap it on the paper like a cone with a piece of lemon… I sat down to enjoy it and of course, I was also asked: where can I buy that?? hahaha…
Mientras me preparaba para irme de Amalfi, seguía encontrándome con gente que comía mariscos y me hacía babear … Terminé preguntando a alguien dónde podía conseguirlo y me enseñó el camino. Era un lugar para llevar y, ¡oh, la variedad de mariscos fritos era genial! Tengo debilidad por lla comida frita… elegí calamares y camarones, los envuelven en el papel como un cono con un trozo de limón … me senté a disfrutarlo y claro, también me preguntaron: ¿dónde puedo comprar eso? jajaja…
Back to Positano to end the day with a Stracciatella and chocolate ice cream.

Another gorgeous day! Early AM it was pouring rain luckily it completely cleared out! I couldn’t get over the view from my room.
¡Otra hermosa día! ¡Temprano en la mañana estaba lloviendo a cántaros y por suerte luego aclaró completamente! No podía superar la vista desde mi habitación.
This is an example of the pathways to make it to the beach and let me tell you, I am a walker and I exercise… my legs were on fire and shaking by the end of the day

Being from the Caribbean I had only seen white sand beaches or different colored sand (Greece) but pebble stone beaches were new to me, getting out of the water was hilarious because once you get in its a bit deep and the waves are strong, you have to try to get out when a wave pushes you out.
Siendo del Caribe, solo había visto playas de arena blanca o arena de diferentes colores (Grecia) pero las playas de piedras eran nuevas para mí, salir del agua fue muy gracioso porque una vez que te metes es un poco profundo y las olas son fuertes, tienes que intentar salir cuando una ola te empuja hacia afuera.
In the Dominican Republic we say the world is a backyard…it may sound weird in English, but listen to this as I am walking out a small shop in Positano I see this couple in front of me… (let me add that I tend to have a good memory)… and I recognized them right away…but here is the catch, I have never actually met them..hahaha. They are the parents of an ex-coworker/friend and they are all over his social media…so what do you do? you sent him a picture of them!
En la República Dominicana decimos que el mundo es un patio… puede sonar raro si eres de otro país pero imagina esto.. mientras salgo de una pequeña tienda en Positano, veo a esta pareja frente a mí … (déjame agregar que tiendo a tener buena memoria) … y los reconocí de inmediato … pero aquí está el punto, en realidad nunca los he conocido … jajaja…Son los padres de un ex compañero de trabajo / amigo y están en todas sus redes sociales … entonces, ¿qué haces? le enviaste una foto de ellos!
