Last stop in South America…Santiago! My stop in Chile’s capital was short but sweet, after visiting Easter Island, I flew back to Santiago for 2 nights and made a backpacking style plan…to stay at the same hostel I stayed at previously without an actual booking, and to my surprise, it was sold out, I got concerned as it was a bit late at night, but luckily they told me of another hostel within walking.
For someone that has never traveled for an extended time, I fell in love with the experience but also got extremely tired, because there were too many places I wanted to see and a specific timeframe to cover them all. You see, before I decided to quit and go backpacking, I had booked a trip to Greece for July, so I had to plan to make sure I saw everything I wanted in South America, stop in the Dominican Republic for a few weeks, make it to NYC, check on my place, repack and catch my flight to Europe.
Santiago is a busy city surrounded by the beautiful Andes Mountains and the view you get when your plane lands there can confirm it, if you make it there, make sure to check that unique view, another interesting detail is that it is considered the longest country in length from North to South. Although it was a short visit, here is my list of what do to in Santiago:
-Join a free walking tour where you get a chance to see the following:Plaza de Armas, Catedral de Santiago, La Moneda, Centro Cultural La Moneda, Lastarria Neighborhood
-Walk around Bella vista neighborhood and Patio Bellavista to see the nightlife or grab some food
-Enjoy the city views from Cerro Santa Lucia-Visit La Chascona, another of Pablo Neruda’s homes
-Eat a good pastel de choclo-Wonder around the Bellas Artes Museum
-Eat empanadas
On my last day, I had to rush back to my hostel as I was running super late, risking missing my flight, so I took a taxi to make sure I wouldn’t miss my flight to Atlanta, which then would connect to my flight to The Dominican Republic.
Mi última parada en Sur América! Santiago de Chile!! Mi visita en la capital de Chile fue corta pero suficiente, después de visitar la isla de Pascua, volé de regreso a Santiago donde permanecería 2 noches e hice algo típico de mochileros…hacer planes sin hacer reservación…había decidido que me quedaría en el mismo hostal de días antes pero cuando llegué me entero de que estaba completamente lleno, me dio un poquito de pánico porque era de noche y me tocaría buscar otro lugar a esas horas, pero por suerte me dijeron que había otro hostal a pocos pasos.
Para alguien como yo, que nunca había viajado por largo tiempo, adore la experiencia, pero también cosas de novatas, me cansé demasiado, porque tenía demasiados lugares que quería visitar y esta parte del viaje estaba limitada a una cantidad limitada de días. Verás, antes de decidir renunciar para viajar por 1 año, había comprado un paquete de viaje para ir a Grecia en julio. Mi viaje comenzó en marzo y en ese periodo de tiempo quería andar lo más que pudiera en América del Sur, pasar unas semanas y mi cumple con mi familia en la República Dominicana, regresar a Nueva York, chequear mi hogar, empacar y volar hacia Europa.
Santiago es una ciudad de mucho movimiento, rodeada por los Andes y si alguna vez vas, no te pierdas la vista desde el avión cuando aterrizas en la preciosa ciudad…es una oportunidad única! Un dato interesante es que es considerada la ciudad más larga de Norte a Sur.
A pesar de que mi visita fue corta, aquí esta mi lista de que hacer en Santiago:-Participar en el tour gratis que te llevará a los siguientes lugares: Plaza de Armas, Catedral de Santiago, La Moneda, Centro Cultural La Moneda, Vecindario Lastarria
-Pasear por el Barrio Bellavista y ver un poco de vida nocturna o comer algo en Patio Bellavista
-Comer un buen pastel de Choclo-Disfrutar de las vistas de la ciudad desde el Cerro Santa Lucía
-Visitar La Chascona, otra de las casas de Pablo Neruda
-Comer empanadas
-Pasear por el Museo de Bellas Artes
El último día, tuve que regresar al hostal corriendo porque se me hizo tarde y tomar un taxi porque estuve cerca de perder mi vuelo hacia Atlanta, donde conectaría a mi vuelo hacia la República Dominicana.

While doing the tour, I asked my guide for a place to grab something quick to eat and he suggested Estacion monjitas, I ordered some empanadas to take while doing the tour.
Mientras iba en el Tour, le pregunte a mi guía por algún lugar donde ordenar algo rápido de comer y me sugirió estación Monjitas, es bien local, nada de turistas y van cocinando las empanadas a la orden.

Municipal Theater of Santiago, National Opera of Chile is considered a National monument, is well over 200 years old and in that time frame it has been destroyed by 2 fires and an earthquake…insane…right?

Here is a very cute interesting fountain that I personally loved and found it funny, if you were to go to check it out but don’t know the story behind it, it wouldn’t make much sense but knowing shows the creativity and historical meaning. The Fountain of the kids is a gift from Argentina to Chile, on their 100 years of Independence, remembering the War of the Pacific. It was a war between Chile, Perú, and Bolivia, where Chile won and earned a mineral-rich coastal area.
The top kid represents Argentina, the right kid is Bolivia, left kid is Perú and the front kid is Chile.
Aquí esta una fuente que me encanto y me pareció super graciosa, pero si vas a visitarla sin conocer la historia, no tendría mucho sentido, pero conociendo el porqué demuestra la creatividad y una buena representación de un hecho histórico para Chile.
La fuente de los niños fue un regalo de Argentina a Chile, al celebrar los 100 años de Independencia, recordando la guerra del Pacifico. Fue una guerra entre Chile, Bolivia y Perú, donde Chile ganó y se apodero de un área costera rica en minerales.
El niño de arriba representa a Argentina, el niño de la derecha es Bolivia, de la Izquierda es Perú y el niño del frente es Chile.

Lovely stroll over Parque Forestal! You see those cute houses, they were built for stray dogs, so they can have a place to rest and find shelter. Stray dogs are everywhere and very common in Latin America and the Caribbean.

For dinner, I ended up having pastel de choclo thanks to the recommendation of my guide Guille.
Pastel de Choclo is a typical dish made out of sweet corned filled with ground beef, raisins, black olives, onions, and a hard-boiled egg. It was so good!
