What would you say you know about Switzerland?
Before visiting, here are some of the things I vaguely knew and what I learned after visiting.
- One of the wealthiest countries in the world
Thanks to its banking system. Different publications share different results; per capita is listed as #10 and #8; however, it has won as the best country in the world ranking for the 4th year in a row according to U.S. News.
¿Qué conoces sobre Suiza? Antes de visitar, estas son algunas de las cosas que sabía más lo que aprendí después de visitar.
- Es uno de los países más ricos del mundo.
Gracias a su sistema bancario. Diferentes publicaciones asignan diferentes valores en la escala; per cápita aparece como #10 y #8; sin embargo, ha ganado como el mejor país del ranking mundial por cuarto año consecutivo según U.S. News.
2. It remained neutral on both World Wars.
Neutral means it did not takes sides on both wars. It had an armed army protecting its borders, ready to attack whoever tried to invade/attack them.
2. Se mantuvo neutral en ambas guerras mundiales.
Neutral significa que no tomó partido en ambas guerras. Tenía un ejército armado que protegía sus fronteras, listo para atacar a quien intentara invadirlos/atacarlos.
3. Relations between Bears and Bern.
On my first day in Bern, my friend took me to see the bears, which was unexpected. The city owes its name to bears; they are on their fountains, flag, buildings, and they have a bear park, where you can check them out. There are many stories, or should I say legends, on how the name happened, but one is that Berchtold V, founder of the city, said he would name it after the first animal he would find hunting, and so it was a bear.
3. Relaciones entre Osos y Berna.
En mi primer día en Berna, mi amiga me llevó a ver a los osos, lo cual fue inesperado. La ciudad debe su nombre a ellos; están en sus fuentes, bandera, edificios, y tienen un parque en honor a ellos, donde puedes visitarlos. Hay muchas historias, o debería decir leyendas, sobre cómo la ciudad obtuvo el nombre, pero una es que Berchtold V, fundador de la ciudad, dijo que le pondría el nombre del primer animal que encontrara cazando, y fue un oso.
4. Bern is a part of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The city earned to be part of the list due to its “Outstanding universal value.” The town founded in the 12th century has architecture from all different centuries, and althought it went through restorations, it has kept its original charm.
4. Berna forma parte de la lista de Patrimonios Mundiales de la UNESCO.
La ciudad participa en dicha lista por su “Valor universal excepcional”. La ciudad fundada en el siglo XII tiene una arquitectura de diferentes siglos, y aunque fue restaurada, ha conservado su encanto original.
5. It’s the only country under a Direct Democracy.
There is no head of state (President); they have the Federal Council, a group of seven members and must make decisions jointly; citizens get to participate up to four times a year and express their opinion and participate in change.
5. Es el único país bajo una democracia directa.
No hay jefe de estado (Presidente); tienen el Consejo Federal, un grupo de siete miembros que deben tomar decisiones de manera conjunta; los ciudadanos pueden participar hasta cuatro veces al año y expresar su opinión y formar parte de cambios.
6. They have four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
If you look at the map, it is clear that Germany, France, and Italy impacted the languages spoken in such a small country as they occupied different regions. Romansh is the least spoken, which is a romance language, I know…that sounds confusing to me too! But it is described as similar to Italian and is expected in the Southeast of the country.
6. Tienen cuatro idiomas oficiales: alemán, francés, italiano y romanche.
Si miras el mapa, está claro que Alemania, Francia e Italia impactaron los idiomas hablados en un país tan pequeño, ya que ocuparon diferentes regiones. El romanche es el menos hablado, que es un idioma romance, lo sé … ¡Eso también me suena confuso! Pero se describe como similar al italiano yes predominante solo en el sureste del país.
7. A sweet haven for nature lovers
From Matterhorn, Rhine Falls, Jungfraujoch, Lake Geneva, Lake Lucerne, Interlaken, to name a few.

Desde Matterhorn, las cataratas del Rin, Jungfraujoch, el lago de Ginebra, el lago de Lucerna, Interlaken, por nombrar algunos.
8. A top destination for ski lovers
I happen to know this, but not much on this topic, except they have some of the best ski resorts, and Zermatt is one of the top destinations as Matterhorn is there.

Tiene algunas de las mejores estaciones de esquí, y Zermatt es uno de los principales destinos ya que Matterhorn se puede apreciar desde ahí.
9. Most well-known brand watches are Swiss.
Swiss watches are expensive because of their craftsmanship and quality. Of course, you know Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Tissot, Longines, Tag Heuer, to name a few.

Los relojes suizos son caros debido a su calidad y elaboración. ¿Conoces Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Tissot, Longines, Tag Heuer?
10. How the bad guys in many movies always have Swiss bank accounts
The reason was that Swiss banks would not disclose a client’s information; in fact, it was possible to open a bank account anonymously, with no name, ID, SSC, just an account number. In the last few years, this has changed, and there is no more secrecy; however, some areas maintain secrecy.
10. Los malos de las películas siempre tienen cuentas bancarias en Suiza.
La razón fue que los bancos suizos no revelarían la información de un cliente; de hecho, era posible abrir una cuenta bancaria de forma anónima, sin nombre, ID, SSC, solo un número de cuenta. En los últimos años, esto ha cambiado y casi no hay secretismo; sin embargo, algunas áreas mantienen ese estilo de servicio.
11. Their chocolate is of the highest quality.
Some things don’t need much explanation, but this can help: Lindt, Milka, Nestle, Toblerone, Cailler. Their chocolate is of the highest quality based on their production, as they get their cocoa beans from other countries.

Algunas cosas no necesitan mucha explicación, pero esto puede ayudar: Lindt, Milka, Nestle, Toblerone, Cailler. Su chocolate es de la más alta calidad en función de su producción, ya que obtienen sus granos de cacao de otros países.
12. Velcro was invented in Switzerland.
I know some facts are very random but at times are the ones I remember the most. A guy called George Mestral noticed that cockle-burs were getting stuck on his pants as well as his dog fur when he went hunting. He was curious about how they would remain attached, and the rest is history.

Sé que algunos hechos son muy aleatorios, pero a veces son los que más recuerdo. Un tipo llamado George Mestral notó que los berberechos se atascaban en sus pantalones y en la piel de su perro un día que salio de caza. Tenía curiosidad por saber cómo permanecerían unidos, y el resto es historia.
