Cómo vivir en el extranjero me cambió
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, I was never the person to go anywhere, not even to a corner shop, let alone another country. During my teenage years, I was devoted to watching TV and sleeping, which felt like pure bliss.
I would never start conversations with strangers, not even for help and, my biggest concern about traveling was what food I would eat (Thoughts of starving would cross my mind).
My mother wanted to offer me the opportunity to live abroad as she had traveled and knew the benefits of it. I was not interested and petrified at the same time, but I have always believed that it is better to try new things once than live with regrets.
Durante mi adolescencia en la República Dominicana, nunca me intereso salir, ni siquiera al colmado de la esquina, y mucho menos a otro país. Mi pasatiempo favorito era ver televisión y dormir.
Era tan tímida que nunca me atreví a conversar con extraños, ni siquiera para pedir ayuda, y mi mayor preocupación sobre viajar era qué comida comería?? (pensamientos de pasar hambre por mañosa pasaban por mi mente).
Mi madre quería ofrecerme la oportunidad de vivir en el extranjero, ya que ella había viajado y conocía los beneficios que conlleva. Yo no estaba interesada, más bien petrificada con la idea, pero siempre he creído que es mejor intentar las cosas una vez que vivir con dudas o arrepentimientos.
My first experience living abroad was as part of an exchange program (AFS) right after high school, to live in Portugal for a year with a family.
The plan was to attend school, learn Portuguese, and a new culture.
Esa primera experiencia en el extranjero fue como parte de un programa de intercambio (AFS) justo después de la secundaria, donde tuve la oportunidad de vivir en Portugal durante un año junto a una maravillosa familia portuguesa.
El plan era asistir a la escuela, aprender portugués y sobre una nueva cultura.
It was intimidating to be the new girl in school, not know the language and, not being aware of how things go, but everyone was very kind; a girl took me under her wing from the get-go, and to this date, we are still in touch.
Era intimidante ser la chica nueva en la escuela, no saber el idioma y no saber cómo son las costumbres en el país, pero los estudiantes fueron super amables; una chica me tomó bajo su protección desde la primera semana y hasta la fecha, seguimos en contacto.
Food was the biggest and most marvelous surprise! it was perfection, imagine that my host mom was a fantastic cook and would make desserts for every meal; I gained 11 pounds that I desperately needed. Growing up, I was always going to the doctor as my parents were concerns I was too skinny; at ten years old, I was only 50 pounds.

¡La comida fue la sorpresa más grata y maravillosa! fue pura perfección! con decirte que me toco una madre que cocina demasiado rico y hacia postres para cada comida; Gané 11 libras que necesitaba desesperadamente. Al crecer, siempre iba al médico porque mis padres se preocupaban que estuviera tan flaca; a los diez años, solo pesaba 50 libras.
To travel around or get to places, I would freeze with the thought of asking strangers but ended up realizing that I would be there forever unless I asked for help, which pushed me to get over it.
Antes para transportarme de un lugar a otro mis padres tenían que llevarme, no me agradaba la idea de preguntarle a extraños y tomar transporte público, pero terminé dándome cuenta de que estaría perdiendo tiempo si no hablaba, lo que me ayudo a superarlo.
The experience completely transformed me into a social butterfly; my career path became clear: Hospitality Industry; my passion for travel and unknown places grew, shaping my future along the way.
My second experience abroad was living in a small French Caribbean island called Guadeloupe for three months as part of my university program. I worked at a 5 Star hotel at the front desk that also helped me practice french.
Later on, I moved to the US, and it’s been 14 years since.
Although it can be scary and challenging at times, living abroad can teach you a lot about yourself and open the door to a whole new you!
La experiencia me transformó por completo en una persona muy sociable; mi trayectoria profesional quedó clara: industria hotelera & Turismo; Mi pasión por los viajes y los lugares desconocidos creció, dándole forma a mi futuro.
Mi segunda experiencia en el extranjero fue vivir en una pequeña isla francesa llamada Guadalupe durante tres meses como parte de mi programa universitario. Trabajé en un hotel de 5 estrellas en la recepción, lo que también me ayudó a practicar francés. Más tarde, me mudé a los Estados Unidos y han pasado 14 años desde entonces.
Aunque a veces puede ser aterrador y desafiante, vivir en el extranjero puede enseñarte mucho sobre ti mismo y abrir la puerta a una mejor versión de ti.
